Mercy Community Hospital Paramedic Rescue
The Haverford paramedic system was originated in 1976 as a municipal based system covering Haverford Township. In 1981, the paramedic system was transferred to Haverford community Hospital for a multitude of reasons, including monetary, training and potential expansion. The system remained a one-man vehicle covering Haverford Township until 1985, when a second unit was added to cover the Townships of Marple and Newtown Square and also to supplement Haverford Township. The system is predominantly an aide-car system, which is supplemented by volunteer ambulances. In the aide-car system, the paramedic responds solo, and is responsible for Advanced Life Support. The exception to this is that Medic 108 consists of two paramedics during the day. In some cases the second paramedic is replaced by and Emergency Medical Technician. The volunteer ambulances sometimes have difficulty providing crews during the day and the second person allows the volunteer ambulance to respond and the second person on Medic 108 will fill the ambulance's crew.
Chief Larry Gentile assisted by Dave Pettit runs the department. We have 12 full time Paramedics, 2 full time Emergency Medical Technicians, 4 perdium Emergency Medical Technicians, 1 part time paramedic and 10 as perdimum paramedics. Currently Mercy Community Paramedic Rescue covers the Townships of Haverford, Marple, Newtown Square and parts of Edgemont. The department also has special training in Rope Rescue and respond with the Mid County SWAT Team.
